Peter Thompson
The Royal Chiang Mai Golf Course was designed by Peter Thompson, five times British Open Champion. The design is reminiscent of a traditional British Parkland course with some interesting "links" additions. The course is heavily tree-lined and water hazards are in play on almost every hole. The "Rough" is true to the meaning of the word.
From the very back "blue" tees the course measures over 7,200 yards and can be a severe test, but from the men's "white" tees the course is pleasant and relaxing. Bunkers use local sand from The Mae Ping river. The greens are Tiff Dwarf Bermuda with Bermuda 419 and Zoysia fairways. The course has a driving range and two practice putting and chipping greens.
The 18 hole, par 72, Peter Thomson designed links style course opened in February 1996. The par 4, 4th ( Hcp 1) is an absolute brute of a hole, playing at 440 yards from the back tees and uphill all the way. Not a hole for the faint hearted. This hole is an exception as the key to scoring well, points more towards accuracy than length. More so, considering there is 94 well-placed bunkers to catch any stray shots. You will find many streams and lakes throughout the 18 holes but not all are in play. The course offers all levels of golfers an enjoyable round with a chance to score well.
Many of the holes are set with beautiful mountain backdrops, so if your game goes to the pack at least the course and it’s backdrops will be pleasing to the eye.
All Tees, Fairways and Roughs are grassed with 419 Bermuda grass and Greens with imported Tiff Dwarf Bermuda grass.
A practice putting and chipping green, as well as a driving range are available for you to fine tune
your skills before attacking the course.
